Welded Wire Forms (also called Wire “Baskets”) are used for a variety of project solutions.

These materials are typically used to construct the rigid facing of temporary MSE structures or within wetlands, ponds, or other areas where the earth structures have a higher risk of settlement while blending into the landscape.

They are more cost effective than cast in place walls, designed to shift and settle without compromise, and offer a time savings in installation vs. other retained earth systems They are an alternate solution to traditional retaining walls when differential settlement is expected in the foundation soils.

Description:

The forms and struts are constructed using W4 diameter steel and the forms are 18” tall by 18” deep and 10’ long.

The forms have 4” by 4” apertures. There are a variety of benefits in using welded wire forms when constructing an MSE wall.

Because of the open face nature of a WWF wall design, the water behind the wall can simply drain through the face reducing the hydrostatic pressure on the facing units compared to a traditional concrete masonry unit.

The forms are available in either black, electro galvanized or hot dipped galvanized meeting ASTM A123. The welded wire form is engineered to provide a form for backfilling soil or rock during the construction of geosynthetic reinforced mechanically stabilized earth structures.

Structs are a steel product produced using 4 gauge wire with hooked ends to be used in conjunction with welded wire forms. Used in construction of reinforced soil slopes earth structures, the struts are used to maintain the 90 degree angle of the welded wire form during backfilling.

Size:

Wire Diameter: 4 gauge(5.2mm)

Opening: 4″ x 4″

Dimension: 18″ x 18″ x 10′ bent at a 90 degree angle

Structs: Galvanized or black steel 4 gauge steel struts (6 per basket)

REINFORCED SLOPES/WALLS

Reinforced Soil Slopes (RSS) are compacted fill embankments that incorporate the use of horizontal placement of geosynthetic reinforcement to create a stable, oversteepened slope structure. Oversteepened slopes often require facial geosynthetic wrap and wire forms for erosion control and constructability at the slope face. Below are two typical face treatments, vegetation face and stone face, with the appropriate products shown supplied by Earth Wall Products. The face wrap for soil vegetated slopes FW24 is UV stabilized to provide important sunlight protection until vegetation is established. For a stone faced structure, we provide a Biaxial geogrid face wrap with extra carbon black for UV protection.

Benefits of Welded Wire Forms

1

Durability and Strength

One of the most significant advantages of welded wire is its durability. The welding process creates a strong bond at each intersection, making the fence resistant to bending and breaking. This durability ensures the fence can withstand harsh weather conditions and potential impacts.

2

Security

Welded wire provides a high level of security. The rigid structure and tightly spaced wires make it difficult for intruders to cut through or climb over the fence. This makes it an excellent choice for securing properties, including homes, schools, and industrial sites.

3

Visibility

Unlike solid fencing options, welded wire allows for clear visibility. This is particularly beneficial for properties where surveillance and monitoring are essential. It allows for easy observation of the area while still providing a physical barrier.

4

Versatility

Welded wire is highly versatile. It can be used in various applications, such as garden fencing, animal enclosures, sports fields, and security perimeters. Its adaptability makes it suitable for both residential and commercial use.

5

Aesthetic Appeal

Modern welded wire designs can be quite aesthetically pleasing. With different coatings and finishes, such as PVC or powder coating, the fencing can blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment, adding to the property’s overall look.

6

Low Maintenance

This type of fencing requires minimal maintenance. The materials used are often resistant to rust and corrosion, especially when galvanized or coated. Occasional cleaning and inspections are usually sufficient to keep the fence in good condition.

7

Easy Installation

Welded wire is relatively easy to install. The pre-fabricated panels can be quickly attached to fence posts, reducing labor time and costs. This makes it a convenient option for those looking to erect a fence without extensive effort.

Application of Welded Wire Forms

FAQ

Q: How to Specify Welded Wire Mesh?

A: Welded wire fabric is designated by four components: two numbers representing the spacing of longitudinal and transverse wires, and two letter-number combinations representing the type and size of longitudinal and transverse wires. For example, in “6 by 8—W8.0 by W4.”

Q: Does a Welded Wire Fence Need to Be Stretched?

A: Yes, you should stretch welded wire fence; though it doesn't stretch like some other types of wire, stretching it tight is important for its stability, lifespan, and preventing sag. You will need fence stretchers like come-alongs and stretcher bars to apply tension evenly, securing the wire to the posts to keep it straight and prevent bulges or damage.

Q: How Far Apart Should Posts Be for Welded Wire Fence?

A: For a welded wire fence, posts are generally spaced 8 to 12 feet apart; though some recommend closer spacing of 6 to 8 feet for better strength and to prevent sagging, especially for heavier or more durable installations. The optimal spacing depends on factors like fence height, the type of animals to be contained, terrain, and wind exposure; with closer spacing required for heavier loads or higher wind resistance.
